KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The old offensive line coach in Andy Reid could appreciate the way the Kansas City Chiefs pried open holes for Jamaal Charles to run free against Seattle on Sunday. He could appreciate the way their defensive front stepped up, too.Given a lead thanks largely to the legs of their dazzling running back, the Chiefs held the Seahawks on fourth down three times in the final quarter. The result was a tense 24-20 victory that pushed Kansas City into a first-place tie with the Denver Broncos in the AFC West. Were sitting there with three fourth-down plays late in the game, Reid said, and they stepped up and did a phenomenal job there getting off the field. As for Charles, who finished with 159 yards and two touchdowns?Hes Jamaal Charles, Reid said. Hes a special player.Russell Wilson threw for 178 yards and two TDs for the Seahawks, and Marshawn Lynch had 124 yards rushing. But Lynch, fresh off a four-touchdown game, was stuffed twice by the Kansas City defence with the outcome hanging in the balance. The Seahawks last-chance drive ended when Wilson threw incomplete on fourth-and-18 at their 20-yard line with 1:13 left. They had a great defence, Wilson said. They just made a great play. The Chiefs first fourth-down stop came with about 6 minutes to go. Lynch was tackled after a 2-yard gain on third down, and coach Pete Carroll elected to gamble at the Chiefs 2. Wilson saw Doug Baldwin in the corner of the end zone but badly overthrew him.Seattle (6-4) held to get the ball back and appeared to convert a third down with a completion at the Chiefs 35. Reid wisely challenged the spot, though, and replays showed wide receiver Jermaine Kearse was a full yard short. The Seahawks again went for it, and Lynch was stuffed for no gain with less than 4 minutes to go.By the time the Seahawks got the ball back one last time, they were pinned so deep in their own territory with such little time on the clock that it hardly mattered.Lynch left without speaking to reporters.Every game weve lost this season it seems like its come down to the last play, whether its defence or offence, Seattle defensive end Michael Bennett said. Thats the name of the game.It made sense the two playoff contenders would wage an old-school, back-and-forth affair. Both are built in the same mould, featuring stout defences and strong running games.Kansas City struck first with a relentless 15-play drive that took up more than 9 minutes of the first half and ended with Charles 1-yard touchdown run. Seattle answered with its own 16-play drive, chewing up exactly 9 minutes and ending with Wilsons TD pass to Baldwin.Nothing really changed the rest of the half.Charles broke two long runs on the Chiefs next possession, including a 16-yard touchdown. Lynch came back with a punishing series of carries to help set up a field goal. The Chiefs overcame two fumbles that led to Seattle scores. Travis Kelce lost the ball near midfield late in the first half, and the Seahawks capitalized with a field goal. Then Charles was fighting for extra yardage again near midfield in the third quarter when he was stripped of the ball.I was doing too much, Charles said. I just lost it as I was going down.Five plays later, Wilson hit tight end Tony Moeaki — who spent most of his first four injury-plagued seasons with Kansas City — with a short touchdown toss for a 20-17 lead.Once again turning to Charles, the Chiefs answered. The elusive running back put a nifty juke on Earl Thomas and scampered 47 yards before getting pushed out of bounds. Gassed, Charles watched as Knile Davis capped the drive to give the Chiefs a 24-20 lead. Then he watched his defence make it stick. It was a heartbreaking loss, Wilson said. We thought we could have or should have won it.Notes: Seahawks WR Ricardo Lockette was ejected in the second half for throwing a right hook at Chiefs CB Kurt Coleman. ... Seattle C Max Unger was carted off with a high ankle sprain and twisted knee midway through the fourth quarter. Patrick Lewis finished in his place. ... Charles had not run for 100 yards in any game this season.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFLRogers Hornsby Cardinals Jersey . The Foreurs were outshot 50-33 by the Edmonton Oil Kings and trailed twice in regulation, yet pulled out a 4-3 win in double overtime Tuesday. Centre Anthony Richard ended the marathon at Budweiser Gardens by scoring on a breakaway at 1:15 in the second overtime. It was the second time in this tournament the opposition put 50 shots on goaltender Antoine Bibeau and Val-dOr emerged with a one-goal victory. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champions concluded their preliminary round 2-1. Theyll play in Fridays semifinal with the victor advancing to Sundays championship game against the Ontario Hockey League champions the Guelph Storm. The host London Knights and Storm conclude the preliminary round Wednesday in a clash of OHL rivals. Guelph is already in Sundays final at 2-0. The winless Knights need a victory to avoid elimination and force a tiebreaker game against the Oil Kings at 1-2. Val-dOr went the full seven games to win both their semifinal and final series in the QMJHL playoffs. The Foreurs had just three days between winning Game 7 in Baie-Comeau, Que., and beating the host Knights 1-0 to open the MasterCard Memorial Cup. For those reasons, Richard was elated with his double overtime winner. "Its huge for us because we played two series in seven games in the Q and we need some rest," said the 17-year-old from Trois-Rivieres, Que. "That two days off is huge for us." Depending on the outcome of Wednesdays game, the Oil Kings will have a rematch with the Foreurs on Friday or take on the Knights in a tiebreaker Thursday. "I thought we deserved a better fate," Oil Kings head coach Derek Laxdal said. "We have to respond and be more resilient." The Oil Kings lost in a tiebreaker to the host and eventual champion Shawinigan Cataractes at the 2012 Memorial Cup. After falling 6-3 to Guelph the previous night, most of the Foreurs shaved off their playoff beards, but for no particular reason they said. Pierre-Maxime Poudrier scored on a short-handed breakaway in the second period for thhe fresh-faced Foreurs.ddddddddddddCaptain Samuel Henley tied the game in the third period to force overtime and Shawn Ouellette-St-Amant also contributed a goal. But Val-dOr was able to stay on Edmontons heels because of Bibeau. The Toronto Maple Leafs prospect stopped 47 shots, including a penalty shot by Edgars Kulda in the first period. Bibeau posted a 51-save shutout in Val-dOrs first game of the tournament against London. He also denied Knights forward Bo Horvat on a third-period penalty shot in that game. "Antoine is just awesome," Henley said. "He keeps us in the game every time. He keeps everyone calm in the room. Hes such a good goalie, a good teammate and a good player. We probably wouldnt have won the game without him." Curtis Lazar had a goal and an assist for the Oil Kings, who led 2-0 after the opening period. Reid Petryk also scored for the Western Hockey League champions and Henrik Samuelsson temporarily restored Edmontons lead early in the third. "When you get the chances to put away a team like Val-dOr, you have to take it," Lazar said. "We were unable to do that and got into a little bit of a marathon." It was the sixth game in Memorial Cup history to go to double overtime, but it wasnt nearly the longest. London happens to be the site of the longest game in Memorial Cup history. The Ottawa 67s downed the Kelowna Rockets 3-2 after 95 minutes 41 seconds in 2005. Oil Kings goaltender Tristan Jarry made 29 saves in defeat in front of 8,745 fans, but the seats thinned out considerably by the start of the second overtime. The years Memorial Cup is 0-for-3 in penalty shots as Jarry denied Londons Ryan Rupert on Sunday. Foreurs defenceman Guillaume Gelinas did not play Tuesday. Assistant coach Mark Pietroniro said earlier in the day Gelinas suffered a "knee contusion" in Mondays collision with Guelphs Chadd Bauman. Val-dOrs top defenceman joined his teammates for warmup, but spent most of it standing beside the boards looking sore. Gelinas left the ice before his teammates did. The Canadian Hockey League fined the host Knights $1,000 for criticizing the officials following Sundays 5-2 loss to the Oil Kings. ' ' '
