OAKLAND, Calif. - Athletics right-hander A.J. Griffin has undergone elbow ligament replacement surgery, becoming the second Oakland starter lost to the season-ending procedure this year. The As say Griffin had the surgery Wednesday morning in Houston after receiving a second opinion on his sore arm Tuesday from Dr. Thomas Mehlhoff. The doctor also operated on Oakland pitcher Fernando Rodriguez last year. Teammate Jarrod Parker underwent the same surgery before the season. The 26-year-old Griffin was 14-10 with a 3.83 ERA last season after making his major league debut in 2012, when he went 7-1 with a 3.06 ERA in 15 starts for the As. The Senators halted a two-game slide with Mondays shootout decision against visiting Philadelphia. It was only the fourth win in the last 12 games for Ottawa, which hasnt won two in a row since a season-best three-game winning streak from Nov. 5-9. Jason Spezza scored in the third round of the shootout to lift Ottawa to a 5-4 triumph over the Flyers. Spezza was the final shooter for Ottawa and he slowed down in front of the net before deking to the forehand and stuffing the puck in. Sean Couturier then rung his wrister off the right post to end the game. "We talked about getting more consistent in our play," said Spezza. "We all knew that if we can be on the same page, well have better results and its starting to show."
