Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the acquisition of infielder Ryan Pineda from the Sioux City Explorers in exchange for pitcher Kaohi Downing. Pineda has also signed a contract for the 2014 season. Pineda, 24, hit .288 in 95 American Association games split between the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Grand Prairie AirHogs. He also hit six home runs and compiled 49 RBI. He saw action at second base, third base, shortstop and in left field. "We got to see him a little bit during training camp last year when we were playing the RedHawks and I really liked the way he played against us," Forney said. "He swung the bat really well. He has the potential to be a young impact bat and, in the right situation, be a 20 doubles and 10 home runs type of guy. Hes a guy that has a lot of value." Following the 2013 season, Grand Prairie traded Pineda back to Fargo-Moorhead, who then moved him to Sioux City. A product of Las Vegas, Nev., Pineda was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 28th round of the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft. He played in the As system from 2010-2012, including most of the 2012 campaign with Class A Advanced Stockton of the California League. Internationally, Pineda represented the Philippines at the 2013 World Baseball Classic qualifying tournament. Downing, 27, spent the last two seasons in the Goldeyes bullpen, going 8-6 with a 3.97 ERA in 79 appearances.
