MONTREAL -- Sebastien Vettel will be in a daunting spot when he lines up directly behind the all-but unbeatable Mercedes AMG duo of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton for the start of the Canadian Grand Prix. The defending champion saw his streak of three straight pole positions in Canada come to an end in qualifying on Saturday afternoon. Instead, Vettel will start on the second row when the race begins Sunday in what is forecast to be near-perfect 27C weather. The German posted the third-quickest lap for Red Bull, while Rosberg edged Hamilton for the pole. Vettels time of one minute 15.548 seconds on the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was more than a half a second behind the two Mercedes, who have dominated F1 since the introduction this year of turbo engines. "Im always confident when I step in the car that its good enough to make it, so well have to wait and see," Vettel said. "In terms of fighting with the car, its still not where I want it to be, still not yet behaving the way I prefer. "Its not like last year when I was stepping into a dream car and everything was smooth and perfect. This year, were not tickling the right spots yet." The 26-year-old Vettel won the last four F1 championships for Renault-powered Red Bull, and took the chequered flag at the Canadian Grand Prix for the first time last year. But how times have changed. The Mercedes team has now claimed all seven pole positions to go with victories in all six F1 races this season. And the long straightaways leading to tight turns and chicanes on the Gilles-Villeneuve track seem to fit the Mercedes package to a tee, with its superior engine power and solid braking. "It was very tight between third and sixth, so Im happy I got the last lap right," said Vettel, who finished ahead of a pair of Mercedes-powered Williams cars driven by Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa. The second Red Bull piloted by Daniel Ricciardo was sixth. "Its good to start third, right behind the Mercedes. Well see what we can do from there in the race." Rosberg won the day when he put up a best lap of 1:14.874 late in the last of three qualifying sessions and Hamilton fell short by less than a 10th of a second on his final run. "Nico did a better job today," said Hamilton, without a trace of the sullen behaviour he showed after coming second to Rosberg in qualifying two weeks ago in Monaco. There, Hamilton felt he was cheated out of a chance to win pole position when Rosberg pulled off late in qualifying, drawing a yellow caution flag. The two have since talked it over and announced that the animosity brewing since the start of the season was over and that they are friends again. Whether the truce holds will be seen when they start side by side on the front row for the race. Rosberg will have the upper hand if he keeps the lead. It may he tough for Hamilton to overtake on the tight track. "Its not that easy, especially with Nico so fast," said Hamilton. "Overtaking is going to be very difficult -- to overtake the same car as mine, especially when were so close in pace. "Ill do what I can. The thing is to try to get as many points as we can." In Monaco, where it is all-but impossible to overtake, Rosberg ended Hamiltons four-race winning run and took a four-point lead in driver standings. "I know its a track where hes really strong, so Im all the more happy that it worked out," Rosberg said of his teammate. "Having won the last race, it just helps a bit. "Lewis had that winning streak and to bring that to an end was important." Rosberg sees the race going the same way the others have, with the two Mercedes battling one another for the victory and the rest of the grid fighting it out for third spot. But Hamilton said his team cant be cocky, especially on a tricky, slippery track known for mishaps and upsets. "I dont think its just between the two of us," said Hamilton. "In qualifying, Sebastian wasnt as close as perhaps they might be, but their pace was good in the last race and I anticipate that theyll be quite strong. "So we definitely cannot disregard Sebastian or Red Bull. We need to be cautious still, and make sure we keep pushing." Red Bull and Renault were left scrambling with the engine change, while Mercedes came up with the best package of engine and car. The new 1.6-litre engines are decidedly quieter, without the high-pitched whine of past F1 cars, and theyre slower. Qualifying times were more than two seconds slower than last year, when Vettel took the pole in 1:12.425. It is still early in the 19-race season, and there is a small chance someone will find a way to close the gap with Mercedes before it is over. "Theyve been very dominant the first couple of races, but we are working hard," said Vettel. "Were completely motivated and we have a strong belief in ourselves. "I think thats the reason weve been so successful the last couple of years. So, rest assured, we wont give up." Vettel matched his best qualifying result this season, while both Bottas and Massa had their best placings. Massa has started no better than seventh on the grid and his best race finish was sixth. Cars were sliding on the slick surface both in the morning practice session and in qualifying. The first 20-minute qualifying ended with 16 seconds left when Marcus Ericsson crashed his Caterham, bringing out the red flags. Earier, Pastor Maldonados Lotus stopped on the track, ending his qualifying early. Esteban Gutierrez did not take part in qualifying after crashing his Sauber in practice. Not that he was complaining. Davis had 13 points, nine rebounds and a career-high eight blocks, and the New Orleans Pelicans emphatically snapped a three-game skid with a 135-98 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night. Each week, TSN.ca takes a look at the top available players in fantasy football ahead of the weekly waiver deadline. Quarterback Eli Manning, New York Giants Last Week: 28-of-39, 300 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT Manning has thrown at least two touchdowns in each of his past three games and is beginning to re-appear on the QB1 radar. After burning the Washington Redskins for four touchdowns in Week 4, Manning now faces the Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys in his next three weeks, all of which are favourable matchups. Manning is available in over 50% of leagues and should likely be your top claim this week. Teddy Bridgewater, Minnesota Vikings Last Week: 19-of-30, 317 yards, 5 carries, 27 yards, 1 TD In his first start, Bridgewater looked extremely competent at the helm of the Vikings offence. Bridgewater enters Week 5 as a shaky at best quarterback option due to the ankle sprain he suffered in the fourth quarter against the Falcons but is worth a pick up looking long-term. Once healthy, Bridgewater could emerge as a replacement for your QB1 during the bye weeks. Bridgewater plays Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers, hurting his recovery time. Running Back Jerick McKinnon, Minnesota Vikings Last Week: 18 carries, 135 yards, 1 reception, 17 yards Though Matt Asiata scored three rushing touchdowns for the Vikings last week, McKinnon is the breakout candidate in the Minnesota backfield. It will be hard for the Vikings coaching staff to ignore McKinnona€?s 7.5 yards per carry average compared to Asiataa€?s 3.9. Though Asiata will likely get the majority of goal line work, McKinnon is the better pickup of the two. If Bridgewater cana€?t play against the Packers on Thursday, McKinnon and Asiata could both be worth starting in a run-heavy offence. Justin Forsett, Baltimore Ravens Last Week: 14 carries, 66 yards, 1 TD The Ravens running back situation remains cloudy and Forsett is just the latest Baltimore back to appear on the Waiver Wire. Forsett out-rushed Lorenzo Taliaferro 66 yards to 58 yards on one less carry last week while Bernard Pierce was held out with injury. Once Pierce returns from injury, the Ravens backfield order should become more clear. Until then, Forsett is a worth having on your roster in case he comes John Harbaugha€?s back of choice. Wide Receiver Louis Murphy, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Last Week: 6 receptions, 99 yards From waivers to the Waiver Wire, Murphy was signed by the Buccaneers on Tuesday and led the team iin receptions and yards on Sunday.dddddddddddd Mike Glennon appeared to key-in on the veteran with 11 targets thrown his way. With rookie starter Mike Evans sidelined until after the teama€?s Week 7 bye, Murphy will likely become a full-time starter in the Buccaneers offence. Hea€?ll be a boom-or-bust WR3 against the questionable Saints defence this week. He caught six passes in the entire 2013 season with the Giants. Allen Hurns, Jacksonville Jaguars Last Week: 5 receptions, 68 yards Hurns is in a receiver corps with a fourth-overall pick in suspended WR Justin Blackmon, a budding star in Cecil Shorts and two 2014 second-round picks (Marquise Lee and Allen Robinson), yet the undrafted Hurns is emerging as the most reliable of the Jagsa€? pass catchers. Hurns is the only one of the bunch to stay healthy through and since training camp and owns a starting spot in the offence. Proving to be more than a one week wonder, Hurns is worth picking up as Blake Bortles and the Jaguars try to throw the ball to keep up with the Steelers in Week 5. Robinson is worth keeping an eye on, but has yet to emerge as a fantasy option. Tight End Larry Donnell, New York Giants Last Week: 7 receptions, 54 yards, 3 TDs Donnell is likely to be the first player claimed in your league this week. Coming off his breakout performance, Donnell is on the TE1 radar and has at least five catches in each of the first four games this season. As the premier tight end in the Giants improving offence, Donnell will be a must-start against the Atlanta Falcons this week. Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs Last Week: 8 receptions, 93 yards, 1 TD Kelce is only available in roughly 30 per cent of leagues, but if youa€?re in one of those, he is a must add. Kelce is the top tight end in an Alex Smith offence that typically relies on short passes. Coming off his monster eight-catch night against the Patriots, Kelce is poised to be a low-end TE1 when the Chiefs play the 49ers in Week 5. Eric Ebron, Detroit Lions Last Week: 3 receptions, 34 yards, 1 TD Tight end continues to be the weakest fantasy position and Ebron is simply the latest option for owners desperate for a scoring threat. Ebron has been unreliable through four weeks but could see his role continue to grow in the Lions offence if tight end Joseph Fauria misses significant time. His high draft status has not yet equaled heavy playing time but that could change soon. Ebron is on the stash radar. Fantasy Football powered by Coors Light. ' ' '
