PORTLAND, Ore. - Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge said Thursday that he tore a ligament in his left thumb that will require surgery and that he could be out six to eight weeks. The three-time All-Star spoke before Portlands game against the Celtics. The Blazers fell to Boston 90-89.Aldridge hurt his thumb when his hand came down on the knee of Sacramentos DeMarcus Cousins in the second quarter of the Blazers 98-95 victory over the Kings on Monday night.Ive definitely sprained my thumb a few times, but this was on a different level, he said. I couldnt even move it.The 6-foot-11 power forward had X-rays immediately following the injury but they were inconclusive. An MRI early Thursday revealed a radial collateral ligament tear.Aldridge leads Portland with averages of 23.5 points and 10.4 rebounds and 1.18 blocks per game. Hes one of just three NBA players averaging at least 23 points and 10 rebounds. That was the last thing I wanted to hear, Blazers guard Damian Lillard said about Aldridges injury. Were an NBA team, its not like we can stop our schedule until he gets healthy. We just gotta keep on moving forward and try to win games. The injury is a big blow to the Blazers, who were already dealing with a depleted front line. Center Robin Lopez is out with a fractured right hand and centre Joel Freeland is sidelined with a right shoulder strain.Starting small forward Nicolas Batum left Thursday nights game against the Celtics after he aggravated a wrist injury that had been bothering him. Batum said afterward he was scheduled to have an MRI.With Thursdays loss, Portland is 31-13 and sitting in third place in the Western Conference, but the Blazers have lost five of six.Its tough, weve been in a pretty good rhythm most of the season, Aldridge said. We have a lot of guys here who can step up and play better, and make plays. So I think the team shouldnt stall, were going to get guys back soon, so that should be good for us.Aldridge said he will have surgery within the week. He was wearing a black sleeve on his wrist and thumb when he spoke to reporters in the Blazers locker room.He said he discussed with the doctors whether he could play with it, but ultimately it was decided that he should have the surgery. They didnt feel the risk was going to be worth the reward, he said. It could be worse on the back end, or I could even wait two weeks and try to play and not end up playing anyways. So we just felt like, to us, the right thing to do is take care of it now.In his ninth NBA season, all with Portland, Aldridge recently moved into second on the franchise list for both points (11,782) and rebounds (5,095). He trails only Clyde Drexler with 18,050 points and 5,339 rebounds.Weve got to hold the fort down, Portland guard Wesley Matthews said. Weve got to figure it out, weve got to find ways to win and continue to play basketball the right way. Its gotten us 31 wins. Custom Toronto Blue Jays Jerseys . Wenger, the longest serving manager in the English Premier League after 17 years in charge, reiterated his desire to stay at the London club beyond next summer when his contract expires. "Honestly, I would love to be here forever because that would mean I would be immortal," Wenger told a news conference on Friday ahead of Arsenals trip to Swansea. "Im not naive enough to believe that. What I would like to do as long as I am here is give my best for this club because I love this club." The Frenchman was targeted by Paris Saint-Germain last season but this week received the full backing of Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke, who said he wants him to remain on a long-term basis and feels "totally aligned" with Wenger. "I am very honoured to have the support of Stan Kroenke," said Wenger, adding that he has turned away many jobs offers during his tenure. "That he thinks I can help the club is a huge confidence vote. That is something for me that is very positive. I dont know (when I will sign a new contract). When we find time." Not everyone at the club seemed to share the owners views earlier thiis season when Wenger was criticized by supporters for his failure to attract big players.dddddddddddd But the signing of German playmaker Mesut Ozil for a club-record transfer fee of 50 million euros combined with the Gunners good start to the season has eased tensions. Arsenal, whose last trophy was an FA Cup in 2005, tops the Premier League standings after five games for its best start in five years -- reversing a trend of slow starts. Wenger is also credited for the clubs healthy financial results over the years. But many fans are craving for another trophy, nostalgic of an era when the Gunners were fighting toe to toe for the Premier League title every season. Wenger, who was appointed as Arsenal manager in October 1996, did not take long to win his first trophy, guiding the Gunners to the Premier League title in 1998. He won it again in 2002 and triumphantly claimed a third crown two years later as his side stayed unbeaten during the entire league campaign. "Our job has a good advantage: You just look forward to the next game. You never look back," said Wenger, being asked to reflect on his 17 years in charge. "I believe that is the most important. Of course when you look backward, theres a lot of effort and consistency in effort behind that. For me the most interesting is tomorrows game." ' ' '
